A Higher State of Consciousness
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord
II Cor 3:17-18
Perhaps you have heard the expression “a higher state of consciousness.” Those who speak of such things usually talk about becoming more self-aware. Some speak of thinking more positively. The thought is that you can change your life by seeing yourself differently.
Believe it or not, the scriptures promise us a higher state of consciousness of sorts. Only, it is not achieved by looking at ourselves. In fact, it comes from looking away from ourselves and looking at Jesus. Who we are is tied to Who He is and what He has done for us. It is only when our eyes are on Him that we can clearly see who we are.
Perhaps you have heard the expression “defining moment.” Defining moments in our lives are decisions and happenings that set the course for our lives. They help define who we are and what we will become.
We as Christians must understand that we have a defining moment that overrides all others. It happened about 2000 years ago when Christ died and rose from the grave. Those events define who we are and all that we have. We as believers are to look at God, ourselves, and our neighbor in light of the cross event. As we do, we will begin to see the world and ourselves differently. This is the true higher state of consciousness. It is the mind of Christ. Moreover, as we read in II Cor. 3:17-18, seeing Who Jesus is and what He has done has the power to transform our lives from glory to glory.

Doug, Thanks for your excellent meditations on scripture. I could not help commenting on this one. It is our Christview Ministries text. Many people assume that the name Christview has something to do with the view from our Center out over the Keel's Creek and King's River Valleys, and I suppose that it has a tiny bit to do with that. But we had the name before we had the place, and the name takes very seriously that, when we focus on Jesus and open ourselves to the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we enter a process of being transformed, degree by degree, into the image of God. It is seeing Jesus that changes us! In short, we begin to become what we were created to be. When you get down to it, the mentoring we do in Bible, prayer, and leadership skills is all simply part of that process of helping the transformation into Christlikeness along. To God be the glory!
