Bono's Thoughts on Religion
I don't see Jesus Christ as being in any part of a religion. Religion is the temple after God has left it.
--Bono of U2
I read this statement today, and I found it quite thought provoking. Any comments?

Doug,
First, regarding semantics. I think Bono is challenging the use of the word "religion" to describe Christianity. Common parlance uses "religion" as a way to approach God. Bono does not accept that word, and I agree. There is no approach to God in Christianity involving rules, laws and rituals, which is really what is meant by the word "religion". Jesus declared that approach to be wrong, and Paul called it dead works.
Second, Bono also seems to say that the life of a Christian is found in relationship to Jesus Christ, not ritual practices -- no matter how well meaning. Again, I completely agree.
Third, Bono seems to be a poet and one who understands Jesus Christ. He captures the need for relationship with a powerful, simple and profound image that has layer upon layer of meaning.
Tariq,
Well said. The older I get, the more anti-religion I become. This statement may shock you especially coming from a pastor. I should make a qualification, however. When I say I am anti-religion, I am talking about the kind of religion that focuses on my deeds as the way to God. On the other hand, religion that is about participation in Christ, I relish.
About 2000 years ago God left the old covenant temple. That was the death knell of religion, and the beginning of limitless relationship with God.
Doug,
You nailed my hesitation in responding to your post. Common parlance talks about religion as a system of works. Yet, the Bible talks about religion in the positive in places. Where it is positive, the context is relationship and works that flow as a result of rather than a way to a relationship.
Participation in Christ, really relating to Him personally, is excellent. Like you, I am very much for it.
I think that Bono was talking about religion in the context of self-made religion, not the pure and undefiled type that you are talking about.
I don't agree with some of Bono's viewpoints, but sometimes the man just has a way with words. For example, click the link below. I especially like his words at the end.

Doug,
I'm in agreement with you. Sometimes I disagree with him, but what he said at the end was exceptional.
